CultFilms presents the definitive version of director Ettore Scola's A SPECIAL DAY aka UNA GIORNATA PARTICOLARE (imdb 8.1) finally shown for the 1st time with the correct - desaturated - colour graduation devised by director Scola and his cinematographer Pasqualino De Santis from a new 4K scan painstakingly restored and winner of the Best Restoration Award at the 2014 Venice Film Festival. Uniquely Cult Films present both the Italian version with improved (switchable) English subtitles and the English spoken audio track. Starring the most iconic couple of all time, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni waltz once again hand in hand in this rarely seen masterpiece. Set in Rome in the late 30s, A SPECIAL DAY tells the story of a key date in Italian history: when on 6 May 1938, Adolf Hitler came to visit Benito Mussolini and all of fascist Rome was mustered, willingly or not, onto the streets to mark the occasion. Whilst the whole block has gone to the town-wide parade to welcome Hitler, Antonietta (Sophia Loren) a resigned housewife and Gabriele, a persecuted homosexual radio announcer (Marcello Mastroianni) both decide to stay at home. Antonietta, mother of 6 has too much housework to do but when the family s pet bird escapes, Antonietta is brought to knock on the door of her neighbour, Gabriele, whom she didn t know before then. Mysterious and shy, Gabriele has also chosen to stay away from the political propaganda rally. Or was he told to stay away? Over the course of the day, the two neighbours forge a very close friendship that will change their perceptions of love, politics and life itself... The film is complemented by the Award-winning documentary on Scola, completed a few days before the great director passed away: RIDENDO E SCHERZENDO. A true masterpiece of world-cinema.
