Based on Jiro Asada's bestselling novel of the same title, Yojiro Takita directs this story of Kanichiro Yoshimura, a low-profile samurai warrior of the Shinsengumi militia (towards the end of the feudal Shogunate era).
Freshly recruited to the Shinsengumi from the Nambu clan, Yoshimura is an extraordinary swordsman but an unbelievable miser with regard to money, a strategy borne of desperation to save his family back home from poverty. Captain of the militia Hajime Saito at first despises him and watches over him sardonically, but gradually begins to feel for and respect his sincerity and truthful sense of honor ("gi"). Meanwhile, as the feudal era reaches an end with the Shogunate toppled, Shinsengumi is destined to a tragic and bloody demise...
Soundtrack music is provided by acclaimed composer Joe Hisaishi, best known for his scores for Hayao Miyazaki's animated Oscar-winner 'Spirited Away' (Sen To Chihiro No Kamikushi) and Takeshi Kitano films including 'Hana-bi' and 'Sonatine'.
The film scooped 3 awards in 2003 at the Japanese Film Academy for Best Film, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.
