Widely regarded by both himself and critics as one of the best performances that Alec Guinness made in his illustrious career, Tunes of Glory is a compelling British film depicting the relationship between acting CO Major Jock Sinclair (Alec Guinness) and his replacement Colonel Barrow (John Mills) In a Scottish regiment battalion Jock Sinclair is the former piper boy who has worked his way up from the ranks through distinguished service in Africa in the Second World War. He stands for old-fashioned tradition and speaking his mind, whereas Colonel Barrow stands for tradition in another sense: his grandfather and great grandfather had both been COs of the battalion and Barrow desperately wants to exceed their careers. His ambitions often come into conflict with Jock`s `traditional beliefs` in the process and with both men having characters flawed by drinking and bullying this is one of the most compelling and critically praised British film dramas of all time.
